On-The-Job Training with Mike Thomas

Editor’s Note: O’Shea Team News interviewed Omar Sandoval, a senior at Centennial High School in Champaign, about job shadowing Superintendent Mike Thomas.

Have you always been interested in construction?

Omar: I’ve been interested in construction since I was 10. When I lived in Mexico, my uncle worked as an electrician. I watched and learned from him, so when I came here (America), I saw trade work as a good way to learn and earn money at the same time.

Why did you decide to job shadow?

Omar: I decided to job shadow because trades people plain and simple physically work hard, no matter what their craft is. This is what I want to do: I want to work hard, have a hands-on career, and make money. The trades allow me to do all three of these things.

Describe your first day of the job shadow.

Omar: I was nervous, but then I met Mike. He’s so nice and made me feel at ease right away.

What have you learned from job shadowing Mike?

Omar: I’ve learned a lot from Mike. I didn’t really know about blueprints or drawings or commercial construction in general, so these are a few key items he has taught me.

What are your plans after graduation?

Omar: I want to learn and get more trade experience. Once I turn 18, my plan is to enter the apprenticeship program.

Omar: Thank you to Mike Thomas and O’Shea for everything and allowing me in your space. I’ve really enjoyed this experience so far, and it has really shown me that I can have a successful career in the trades.
