Now’s the Time to Schedule Your School’s Summer Renovations

The clock is ticking down until the bell rings for the final day of school.

The end of school might not feel close if you’re working inside those hallways, but those of us making preparations for summer construction projects know that we need to start now!

“Thinking about the remodeling projects in May that your school facility needs to be completed during the summer months is really too late,” says Jeff Jarrett, Director of Building Services at O’Shea. “For example, consider lead times on materials: doors alone can take up to 12 weeks to come in.”

By the time we partner together to formalize our pricing, get necessary approvals from the board of education, and resources aligned, now is the ideal time to get the ball rolling on your school’s summer renovations.

To ensure an efficient process and avoid costly delays, it’s important to:

  • Give administrators time to allocate funds from budgets and get financial resources lined up
  • Allow time to get permits or board approvals
  • Secure all materials for the project as early as possible
  • Align schedules of all contractors
  • Stay on timeline to avoid rushing a project or risk incomplete work when students return in the fall

What school projects should you be considering?

  1. Facility repairs and maintenance
  • Roofing repairs
  • HVAC maintenance or replacement
  • Electrical system upgrades (including updating wiring or improving lighting)
  • Flooring in hallways or rooms
  • Doors, frames and hardware
  1. Classroom upgrades
    • Flooring replacement (concrete floors for chemistry labs are very popular right now)
    • New cabinetry
  2. Restroom renovations.
    • Upgrading sinks, toilets and hand dryers for a better aesthetic and efficiency
    • Touchless fixtures for better hygiene
    • Replacing tiles

At O’Shea, we’ve partnered with schools around Central Illinois for renovations, remodels, and repairs. We know it’s important to get in quickly when school’s out for the summer so we can stay on schedule, have all materials delivered and ready to go, and complete the phasing plan.

“There’s always a big push to get things done before the kids come back in the fall, to minimize distractions during learning,” Jeff says. “So, there’s no time to waste if you want projects done over the summer this year!”
