Evan Westlake; Real Men Read Experience
· - Describe what the program is and what school are you assigned to?
The Real Men Read program is hosted through Springfield Public Schools - District 186. The program connects male role models with students through monthly classroom visits, where they share their love of reading. As part of the program, students take home their own copy of that month's book to continue their reading journey. As a first-time mentor, I’ve been assigned to Lee School.
· - What motivated you to become a mentor in Real Men Read?
My family and I are all voracious readers, and I think it’s important to nurture love of reading as early as possible. If I can go in and help a class of first graders see that reading is fun, I think that puts them on a positive trajectory for future learning. All learning is built on a foundation of reading.
· - Can you share a particularly memorable moment or interaction you’ve had with students during a reading session?
I’ve been impressed with how attentive the students are. It’s been fun to hear their perspective as I read the book and ask questions. My favorite memory was after class one week, I handed out copies of the book I just read, and one of the young boys gave me a hug as I handed him the book; it's incredible to witness how such a small gesture would have such a profound impact on him.
· - In what ways have you noticed students’ responses change over time through this program?
The first week was really about the students getting to know me and vice versa. At first, they weren't as engaged about the book and were fairly timid. As time passed, they were beginning to answer questions but also couldn’t wait to tell me their siblings’ names or what they did during recess. They really opened up and seemed to enjoy each of our sessions more than the last.
· - How has being a reading mentor impacted you personally?
Being a reading mentor has really helped give me perspective. As I mentioned previously, my family and I love to read as many books as possible. It’s been eye-opening to realize not everyone does that. It has been heartwarming to see how receptive these students are to reading and more importantly discussing these books.
· - What’s your favorite children’s book?
One of my favorites is “Goodnight Moon”, which I’ve read countless times with my children at bedtime. In the last year, I re-read the “Chronicles of Narnia” series by C.S. Lewis and truly enjoyed it too.
· - Favorite part about being a mentor?
By far, my favorite part of being a mentor is watching the students' growth over time as they get more comfortable with me and are more willing to share when we discuss the books.
· - What surprised you most about reading with students?
The students opened up so quickly to someone they had never met before. They could not wait to jump in with their own story or anecdote, and they acted like we’d known each other for years.
